Lewis spins 2s to win vs SJM in season opener.
The start of the new season usually means either a cancelled first game or a rain-interrupted one so it was a pleasant change to arrive at St James with the sun beating down knowing it was game on.
Unfortunately for SJM they had had mower issues meaning the normally pristine pitch was very green as they had been unable to cut the pitch in the lead up the game. SJM skipper Mike Edmonds wasn’t too happy about it but with the pitch the same for both sides we got going.
BHCC skipper Matt Charman won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bowl and this paid dividends as Akeem Ifill (3-13) took three quick wickets. The first was a good catch from young Jack Smart behind the stumps and then two clean bowled. SJM were finding runs difficult to come by with only Edmonds looking comfortable. Matt Charman brought himself on alongside U16 Lewis Mamoany and both continued to take wickets including Lewis bowling Edmonds and from then on it was over quickly with the skipper taking 3-13 and Lewis an excellent 3-10, SJM all out for 57.
We batted before tea and a quickfire 30 n/o from the returning Shaun Kevern took the game quickly away from SJM who to their credit tried everything to get early wickets with Teddy and Akeem both out. We clinically finished the game 2 down and then had tea before getting home to watch the 1s game at SJP.
So a good start vs a team that will improve as the summer goes on as they get players back, but we were too good on the day for them with the ball. Lewis gets MOM for an excellent spell of bowling especially at the end of overs where he took wickets with the pressure he built.
We play Brighton 3s at home next weekend.
